Royal Patronage

Her Majesty Queen Sirikit of Thailand serves as the President of the Thai Red Cross Society, the mother organization of the Thai Red Cross AIDS Research Centre.

Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn serves as the Executive Vice-President of the Thai Red Cross Society.

Both Her Majesty Queen Sirikit and HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn have undertaken various activities to promote the nation’s medical and health services that greatly benefit all Thai citizens.

Her Royal Highness Princess Somsawali has a keen interest in HIV/AIDS. For over two decades, HRH Princess Soamsawali has worked tirelessly to improve the lives of Thai people with HIV/AIDS.  HRH is a strong advocate for HIV prevention of mother to child transmission.  In the early 1990s Thai women had no access to AZT to prevent HIV transmission to their babies.  Under HRH patronage and funding, the Thai Red Cross Society has been able to start a program to prevent many children from being infected with HIV by providing free HIV medications to pregnant women and their infants since 1996.  HRH’s concern for the health and welfare of families with HIV inspired a program to provide lifelong triple therapy to the whole family starting with mothers during pregnancy and to fathers and children if they are infected.

HRH Princess Soamsawali continues to strongly support campaigns against HIV stigma and discrimination. She presides over the Thian Song Jai function (Candle Light in the Night) held by the Thai Red Cross Society and Wednesday Friends Club, a club of people living with HIV, on 1 December, the World AIDS Day, every year since 1991. She also presides over many important events organized by the Thai Red Cross AIDS Research Centre to promote awareness on HIV/AIDS.

H.R.H. Princess Somsawali extends her kindness and concern to all projects under the Thai Red Cross AIDS Research Centre. The following Thai Red Cross AIDS Research Centre programs are officially under HRH’s royal patronage:

  • The Program for Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT)
  • The Program of Life Giving to the Parents of HIV-free Babies
  • Formula Feeding Fund for newborns
  • Princess Soamsawali AIDS Medication Fund of the Thai Red Cross Society

The Thai Red Cross AIDS Research Centre is grateful for HRH’s endless and numerous contributions to the HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment efforts in Thailand.
